  The lessons of war are the history of wars themselves. As each war fought is unique, it also provides unique insight into the warfare strategy, technology, military maneuvres, politics and ultimately human nature.  
  The following list represents what are broadly regarded as the most significant "modern wars" since the 19th century. This point is selected to define modern-warfare, principally because it represents the beginning of Total warfare.
